The new Bill was given MPs’ approval this week and pending amendments and final approval in the autumn, will be implemented at the end of the transition period on 1 January 2021.

From then on, to employ an EU citizen coming to the UK will require being registered as a visa sponsor, entailing additional fees plus reporting and monitoring duties.  https://www.gov.uk/uk-visa-sponsorship-employers    

In its current form (which is still being negotiated), the point-based system will mean that from January 2021, EU citizens coming to the UK for work will need to meet ALL the following criteria in order to obtain a visa:

  • speak English to an approved level
  • have a job offer from an approved sponsor
  • the job must be at a minimum skill level of ‘A’ Level

The job must have a minimum salary of £25,600, however applicants with a PhD or working in a ‘shortage occupation’ will be able to ‘trade’ these against a lower salary.

NB EU citizens and their families already living in the UK before 31 December 2020 will not be affected by the points-based system.
